Lunch Talks - Where does the Swedish General Election take place? Exploring key concepts in contemporary pol. discourse

As part of our lunch talk seminar series, we are delighted to be welcoming Lars Vetle Handeland, currently pursuing a PhD in Political Science at Lund University, to discuss the topic “Where does the Swedish general election take place? - Exploring key concepts in contemporary political discourse”. 

Some of the questions that will be addressed are: How should we conceive of the larger context in which a general election takes place? Is it within an international system or society of states, as a part of world politics, does it occur in a global or globalised realm? All or none of the above? Seeing as there is no shortage of concepts, imaginaries and metaphors that seek to specify the nature of our world, this talk will try to unpack some of the key concepts that one often encounters in political discourse. The idea and goal of this talk is to help voters know what is at stake when certain concepts and terms are used. While this talk will not include exhaustive histories and strict definitions of all these, it seeks to help citizens and international voters reflect upon the use of concept in a critical manner.  

Lars V. Handeland holds a Master of Science degree in International Relations from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, where he also worked as a teaching assistant. In his dissertation project he examines the genealogy of authority as a concept in international political thought. Other research interests include how we conceive of notions such as 'international', 'global' and 'universal', which will be the focus of his lunch talk.
